pandemia: Hii! I've been lurking on UTAU-related forums for years but haven't had the habit of registering accounts until lately. Nice to meet you!

Synth is short for synthesizer which is a type of computerized instrument. Here's the definition from google:
syn·the·siz·er ˈsinTHəˌsīzər/Submit noun an electronic musical instrument, typically operated by a keyboard, producing a wide variety of sounds by generating and combining signals of different frequencies.
If you're referring to UTAU Synth, it's the UTAU program made specifically to work for mac computers. The one that most users use is UTAU for PC (Windows machines). The rare Linux user uses the 2.76 PC version via Wine (An emulator of sorts for using Windows programs - it's not perfect and a lot of programs don't work 100%).
She just wanted to know what a literal "synth" means. Synths are not UTAU/Vocaloid specific.
I know. I just thought I'd provide UTAU synth as well since she didn't (clearly) specify if she just wanted a definition (unless my reading comprehension skills are slipping).
No no, sorry, I meant the UTAU version. :3 But I didn't know Shira's post either, and you can never have too much information when it comes to technology. >w<
